February 6th is designated by the UN in 2012 as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. Together with activists,grassroots and survivors across different communities, we join our efforts with the aim to amplify and direct the efforts on the elimination of FGM under the 2021 theme "No Time for Global Inaction: Unite, Fund, and Act to End Female Genital Mutilation"

For the 2021 international day of Zero Tolerance for FGM, a series of events were held across the globe with allies sharing with the world on social media using #Act2EndFGM. To promote the elimination of FGM, coordinated and systematic efforts must engage whole communities and focus on human rights, gender equality, sexual education and attention to the needs of women and girls who suffer from its consequences.

Some of our highlights from this week include:

The UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme to Eliminate Female Genital Mutilation and the Five Foundation hosted a virtual event to celebrate the power of grassroots activism and strengthening partnerships to reach the common goal of ending harmful practices including zero FGM by 2030 as set out in the Sustainable Development Goals.

Keynote speakers included The Executive Director of Msichana Empowerment Kuria, Natalie Robi and Nimco Ali OBE, founder of the Five Foundation

On February 6th, Msichana Empowerment Kuria partnered with various stakeholders to lead and host the inaugural WOMEN GRASSROOTS LEADERS WORKSHOP AS ADVOCATES TO END FGM at Ikerege, Kuria West in Migori County.

Last but not least. UN Girls Education Initiative in collaboration with Msichana Empowerment Kuria highlighted ways in which education can be used as a tool to accelerate #EndFGM
